Alfonso Prat-Gay
An Argentine government official with nearly three decades of banking and finance experience, Alfonso Prat-Gay is a former minister of economy in the South American country, serving under President Mauricio Macri. Among other measures implemented during his tenure, Alfonso Prat-Gay lifted capital controls on the country’s currency just six days after taking office. He also eliminated export taxes on mining as well as wheat, corn, fishing, and meat.
Before resigning in December 2016, Alfonso Prat-Gay also ended Argentina’s sovereign default, which was declared 15 years prior. He also restored international relations and returned the country to the international capital markets by securing investments from global partners at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in 2016. His visit there marked the first time Argentina participated in the WEF since 2003.
Earlier in his political career, Alfonso Prat-Gay was a congressman representing the city of Buenos Aires and president of the Central Bank of Argentina. He was named Central Bank Governor of the Year in 2004 for his efforts to maintain an 8 percent economic growth while reducing inflation from 40 to 5 percent. He holds a master’s degree in economics from the University of Pennsylvania.
